A Family-Owned Business Since 1871
Our history began 140 years ago on the banks of the Ohio River in East Liverpool, Ohio. Founded by original owners Homer and Shakespeare Laughlin, The Homer Laughlin China Company was one of the country’s first whiteware plants.
In 1897, Homer Laughlin sold his interest to the Wells and Aaron families, who jointly maintained the family business through successive generations. After relocating across the Ohio River to Newell, West Virginia in 1907, Homer Laughlin China continued to experience exceptional growth, quickly accounting for 10% of all china sold in the United States.
With the 1936 introduction of its signature Fiesta® line, Homer Laughlin’s reputation for artistry and innovation was forever established. Revered for its stunning colors and remarkable durability, Fiesta® became an icon of American design. Reintroduced in the 1980s, Fiesta® remains Homer Laughlin’s best selling line and is today one of the most beloved and collected dinnerware lines in the world. In 1959, Homer Laughlin began serving the restaurant and hotel industry with the launch of a new, fully vitrified china line. With contemporary shapes, colors and patterns added every year Homer Laughlin has a commitment to artistry and integrity that has never wavered.
Homer Laughlin China is recognized today as the standard of high-quality, American-made dinnerware for chefs and food service professionals.
Four generations later, Joseph M. Wells III leads the company as it embraces its second century in the same West Virginia facility. With a vision that includes ongoing plant modernization and continued product excellence, we remain steadfast in our commitment to making high-quality products with integrity. In short, Homer Laughlin China stands as a tribute to family ownership…and the profound pride of the American potter.
